Welcome to this new section of the Dental Column.

Hopefully all our readers will enjoy it and have the opportunity to learn about the exciting advances and technologies that modern dentistry has to offer.

WOW! MODERN DENTISTRY

The evolution of every aspect in our societies is a fact. Constant changes have taken place in the structure of organizations and professional fields due to an enormous amount of knowledge and information that characterizes our modern and fast paced world.

There have been many advances in Dentistry. Some of these changes might have been considered science fiction a decade ago. For example:

* How would you like to have whiter teeth in a week in the comfort of your home?

* Say good-bye to the dental drill. For some small procedures a technique known as "microabrasion" can be used. No pain. No anesthesia required.

* How about new ceramic materials that are computer generated and once bonded to the teeth are virtually imperceptible?.

* Did you know that root canals can be performed in a one hour visit with the use of a potent microscope and the help of computerized radiographs?.

* How would you like for you and your children to be free of dental decay for the rest of your life?

* Did you know that oral surgeons can make bone actually grow in any desired place or direction?.

These are only some of the fascinating advances in dentistry that I will discuss with you in the near future and that are changing the outcome of treatment and the overall patient experience.

Because the amount of knowledge in each field is so broad, all the different professions tend to subdivide their areas of knowledge into many "specialties". In dentistry, this is as true as with any other profession. After a dental student graduates as a general dentist, He (she) has to choices: to practice as a general dentist or specialize in one of the many fields that require additional training in order to attain advanced degrees in dental education.

Next time I will inform you about the different specialties in dentistry and how to choose a dentist according to his/her area of training.
